Five-Spice Pork Patties
Five-spice pork patties offer a unique twist on your basic breakfast sausage. The Chinese 5-spice provides a stimulating fragrance of cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and peppercorns. Actual formulas may vary depending on the brand but may contain ginger, nutmeg, turmeric, cardamom, or fennel.
Chinese 5-Spice is readily available at most grocery stores in the International isle and can be used as a spice rub and marinades on meats or seafood. I previously did a recipe for a 5-spice chicken stir fry that was delicious! If you are trying to build out your spice cabinet, this blend offers a unique option to get more bang for your buck. It can be potent, so use it sparingly as you experiment until you find your desired ratio for recipes. I found the amount used in this recipe to be just right!
My favorite way to pair these pork patties is with greens and kimchee as a breakfast, with eggs over easy on top. The richness of the egg’s runny yolk compliments the flavor of the 5-spice perfectly. However, this would also be delicious as a packable lunch or mini-meal for on the go along with some snap peas, green beans, sweet mini pepper. I love having patties and burgers as a prepped meal option because the protein is already portioned out. Just grab one to four patties (depending on your goals) and you are good to go! As always, I encourage doubling the recipe to really be efficient with your prepping efforts.
