Thousand Trails Medina Lake RV Campground – Texas

Finally, we settle our butts down a little bit spending more than two nights at a campsite, and are we glad we did! This Thousand Trails Medina Lake RV campground is the semi, world-famous deer feeding campground of Medina Lake, just about an hour Northwest of San Antonio. You either love it or hate it, because there are dozens of dear literally within feet from you and your campsite all day. We didn’t feed the deer, but that did not stop them from grazing the grass all around our site and letting us watch up close and personal through out the day and into the sunset over the lake.

Grounds/Sites

I feel we got the best site of the whole grounds right on a corner spot facing the lake (107).  Every night we watched the sunset and the adolescent bucks playing in the shallow grassy waters, rattling their antlers together and chasing each other around. It was nothing short of magical to see.

We really loved the feel of the grounds at Medina Lake. As we traveled south, further into Texas, we really enjoyed how the landscape changed outside of San Antonio towards the campgrounds. It became a noticeably more hilly and dry scene with small thorny shrubs,  Ash Junipers and Live Oaks. Both my wife and I noticed it immediately and commented on feeling like we’re nowhere near Minnesota now!  I found out later this territory is called  Hill Country.

Location

Being about an hour drive to San Antonio this park is a great location to make that day trip and  see the famous River Walk, Alamo, or SeaWorld. We loved the River Walk so much that we went twice! It was the perfect blend of busy city life with all the people, shops and restaurants, but then also had the amazing beauty of  the river. We literally walked 50,000 steps over the two days. A must see!

Amenities

This park had a very similar feel to the other Thousand Trails  campgrounds in Texas in the sense that it has everything you need to have an enjoyable time, but you can tell that it has not been updated for a few decades. As I’ve said before this doesn’t really bother us much and really enjoy the fact that we are out in nature and living life! The pool was closed during our stay in January. But, we could see it was a very large and spacious looking area to relax in the sun. The laundry facility was pretty outdated, located in small shack like building. They had a very nice large indoor activity along with large playground, mini golf and hiking trails.

I would say the shining star at Medina Lake is the campground being right on the lake with a large picnic area and boat ramp. Too cold for us to go in, but the view was fantastic.  Also, I have to add a note about the laundry from Christine, “Creepy little shack, but got the job done!” Also, check out our overview of Thousand Trails. Thanks and feel free to ask us any questions in the comments below and we will do our best to answer them right away.
